Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations were introduced in 1994 to control and improve health and safety on commercial building sites. Since then property and construction industry professionals have been complying with these regulations and the number of accidents and injuries occurring on building sites has fallen.

In 2015 the regulations were amended and extended to include building works carried out on domestic properties and they place specific legal duties on all parties involved in a construction project - the building owner, the designer and the contractor.

CDM2015 means you have a legal responsibility to ensure your construction work is undertaken safely and doesn’t pose a potential risk to yourself, your neighbours and other members of the public or the builders you employ. However, the regulations are such that your legal duties can be passed to the construction specialists you appoint so you do not have to be knowledgeable or an expert yourself. You just have to make sure you appoint appropriate and competent people.

In appointing me to undertake your pre-construction design work and obtain building control approval you will have fulfilled your duty to demonstrate your extension is properly designed to meet standards and can be safely constructed.
Further information about CDM2015 and the duties of clients, designers and contractors can be obtained from the HSE website

Contractors not wishing to engage with CDM2015 should be avoided
